ACEL students selected to attend DC conference

Four students from the Department of Agricultural Communication, Education, and Leadership were selected to attend the Collegiate Washington D.C. Leadership Experience. The Ohio Corn and Wheat Growers Association sponsored the selected students.

This four-day experience, from July 13-16, 2015, is an opportunity for students to network with agricultural leaders, growers from across the U.S., and other collegiate leaders.

Students from the Department of Agricultural Communication, Education, and Leadership include:

Amanda Bush, a sophomore in agricultural communication
Mary Siekman, a junior majoring in agricultural communication
Carley Snider, a junior majoring in agriscience education
Sydney Snider, a sophomore majoring in agricultural communication

A Different Perspective

I have known ever since I was a little girl that I wanted to help people. Growing up, I helped my mom take care of my little sisters, helped build my family’s agritourism business and helped “make the best better” by completing community service through my county’s 4-H program.

When I was a teenager, I realized that I wanted to carry my passion for helping others into a career that would directly impact the community.  Being a part of the 4-H program made me realize what an impact that extension educators can have on youth, and prompted me to pursue a career in extension.

As part of my studies in Community and Extension Education, I completed my 2 week Early Field Experience in Hardin County Extension office.

Before starting my Early Field Experience in Hardin County, I had only experienced what happens in my local office, Washington County.  Even though I knew Washington County’s programs relatively well, I had not been aware of all the things that educators do behind the scenes.  I also learned that a collaborative effort is important among all extension program areas, including 4-H Youth Development, Agriculture and Natural Resources, Family and Consumer Sciences and Community Development, to ensure a strong county extension program.

Mark Light, the 4-H Educator, made arrangements for me to work with the ANR and FCS educators, as well as himself and the 4-H Program Assistant.  I learned that a lot more goes into extension than planning camp, pre-fair judging and the county fair. Our educators work so hard to improve our communities, and I am now more grateful for them than I ever have been before.  I cannot wait to use what I learned in my future extension career!

ACEL Alum named Teacher of the Year

Katrina Swinehart, a 2011 (B.S) and 2013 (M.S.) graduate of the Department of Agricultural Communication, Education, and Leadership, was recently selected as one of DuPont Pioneer’s Agriscience Teachers of the Year. The applications go through several rounds of evaluation by the National Association of Agricultural Educators, with 50 teachers ultimately chosen for this honor.

Katrina Swinehart

As an Agriscience Teacher of the Year, she attended an intense one-week training at DuPont’s Chesapeake Farms in Chesterton, Maryland where the teacher winners learn about inquiry-based learning strategies and prepare workshops that will be presented to teachers at various national and state events. Swinehart said, “I learned dozens of new strategies to use inquiry in my classroom. We also learned literacy strategies to use seamlessly with our class content.”

Swinehart began teaching high school AgriScience courses in June 2013. She currently teaches at Cedarville High School and Greeneview High School for the Greene County Career Center.

“During high school, I was heavily involved with the Agricultural Science and FFA programs at my high school,” Swinehart said. “My ag teachers made an impact on my community and fellow students and I decided that’s what I wanted to spend my career doing too.”
