Why Recycle?
Ohio State University has set an ambitious goal of achieving a 90% diversion rate by 2025. To achieve this goal, students and staff must increase their commitment to proper recycling. Here are some quick and easy guidelines:
- Napkins must be placed in the trash
- Coffee cups (Crimson Cup, Connecting Grounds, Starbucks, etc.) must be placed in the trash
- Greasy pizza boxes must be placed in the trash
- Food containers (to-go boxes) must go in the trash or compost
- Plastic that is not a bottle or jug must go in the trash
- Coffee sleeves must be recycled
- Paper and cardboard must be recycled
- Bottle and jug shaped plastics must be recycled
Here is why it is so important that we follow these guidelines:
Our goal is a 90% diversion rate. Since 2014, our diversion rate has decreased by over 15% to 28.5%. This trend can be reversed by adhering to simple recycling rules to avoid contamination.
